What is MOT, what MOT history reveals and how to detect a clocked odometer — everything you need to know before buying a used car in the UK.

MOT (Ministry of Transport) is a mandatory annual roadworthiness test for most cars over three years old in the UK. It checks whether the vehicle meets minimum safety and environmental standards. Driving without a valid MOT is illegal — it carries a fine of up to £1,000 and the vehicle can be seized.
Tests are carried out at DVSA-approved garages (Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency), and results are stored in the UK government's publicly accessible database.
MOT history is free
Unlike a finance check, MOT history is publicly available through official government data. You can check it for any car using the registration number.
BuyCarCheck (recommended)
Enter the registration and instantly see the MOT status, expiry date, and full history — including mileage at every test, failure reasons, and advisory notes. All in one report.
DVSA MOT History Service (gov.uk)
The official government service. Shows full MOT history but no tax status or vehicle details.
DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service (gov.uk)
Shows current MOT and tax validity, but no test history or failure reasons.
Clocking is illegal and still widespread on the UK used car market. MOT history is the best tool to catch it — mileage is recorded at every test. If you see mileage decrease between tests, or stay suspiciously flat over years — that's a serious red flag.
| Year | Recorded mileage | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 22,000 | ✓ |
| 2021 | 34,500 | ✓ |
| 2022 | 47,100 | ✓ |
| 2023 | 38,200 | ⚠ Mileage drop |
| 2024 | 41,800 | ⚠ Suspicious |
Advisories are items flagged by the inspector as needing monitoring — not serious enough to fail the car, but signalling wear that will likely need attention soon. They don't prevent a pass, but they're important.
Cars under three years old have no MOT history — they don't need one yet. If an older car has no history, it could mean:
