Before buying any used car in the UK, checking its MOT history is one of the most important steps you can take. An MOT history reveals mileage at every test, past failures, and advisories — and it's completely free to access.

An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is a mandatory annual safety inspection for most vehicles over three years old in the UK. It checks that your car meets the minimum road safety and environmental standards. A valid MOT is a legal requirement to drive on public roads — without one, you can be fined up to £1,000 and your car can be seized.
MOT tests are carried out by DVSA-approved garages and the results are recorded on the official DVSA database, which is accessible to the public for free.
MOT history is free to access
Unlike finance checks, MOT history is publicly available through official government data. You can check it for any vehicle with a valid registration number.
There are two official routes to check a vehicle's MOT status:
BuyCarCheck (recommended)
RecommendedEnter any UK registration and instantly see MOT status, expiry date, and full history including mileage at every test, failures, and advisories. All in one report alongside tax status and vehicle details.
DVSA MOT History service (gov.uk)
The official government service at check-mot.service.gov.uk. Shows full MOT history but no tax status or vehicle details — you'd need to cross-reference with the DVLA separately.
DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service (gov.uk)
Shows current MOT expiry and tax status but no historical tests, mileage records, or failure reasons.
A full MOT history is one of the most valuable tools for a used car buyer. Here's what you can see:
Clocking — winding back a car's odometer — is illegal and still widespread in the UK used car market. MOT history is the single best tool for catching it.
Every time a car is tested, the mileage is recorded. If you see the recorded mileage going down between tests — or staying suspiciously flat for years — that is a red flag. For example:
| Year | Recorded mileage | Flag |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 22,000 | ✓ |
| 2021 | 34,500 | ✓ |
| 2022 | 47,100 | ✓ |
| 2023 | 38,200 | ⚠ Drop in mileage |
| 2024 | 41,800 | ⚠ Suspicious |
Advisories are items that the MOT tester flagged as worth monitoring but not serious enough to fail the car. They don't prevent the car from passing — but they often indicate wear that will need attention soon.
Cars under three years old won't have an MOT history — they don't need one yet. But if an older car has no history, that can mean:
Always ask the seller to explain any gaps in MOT history. A plate change to conceal history is a serious red flag — a full vehicle check will reveal previous plates.
