The second-hand car market in the UK has shifted. Prices that were inflated during the chip shortage and pandemic years are finally softening, which means £5,000 buys considerably more car in 2026 than it did in 2022. You can realistically find a 5–8 year old hatchback with under 60,000 miles and a full service history for this budget.
The catch: there's a lot of junk in this price band too. Private sellers offloading problem cars, ex-rental fleets with questionable maintenance histories, and the occasional outstanding finance trap. Before you hand over any money, run a free check on the registration — at minimum to confirm the MOT history and mileage stack up.

The gold standard for reliability under five grand. Japanese engineering, famously bulletproof engines, and running costs that barely register. Find a pre-facelift (pre-2017) for under £4k or stretch to the facelift for a cleaner interior and better infotainment.
Watch out: Catalytic converter theft is a known issue on older Yarises — check the underside and ask for service history.
2013–2019 · £3,000–£5,000

Britain's best-selling car for a reason. Genuinely enjoyable to drive, cheap everywhere — parts, servicing, insurance. The 1.0 EcoBoost is the sweet spot: peppy, economical, and widely available. Avoid early 1.0 EcoBoost engines (pre-2014) which had known coolant issues.
Watch out: Clutch wear on high-mileage city cars. Rear beam axle corrosion in older examples. Always check the service history.
2015–2021 · £4,000–£5,000

VW Group mechanicals at a fraction of the price. Spacious for its size, well-built interior, and very cheap to service. The 1.0 MPI is near-indestructible. A properly underrated choice — most buyers overlook it, which means better deals.
Watch out: Older 1.2 TSI engines can suffer timing chain stretch — budget for a chain check on anything over 60k miles.

The most abundant car at this price point — which means you can be choosy. Stick to the 1.4 petrol, avoid the 1.0 turbo (reliability issues), and find one with full dealer service history. Parts are everywhere and cheap.
Watch out: 1.0 Turbo engines (SIDI) have a documented misfire issue. Stick firmly to the 1.4 naturally aspirated. Also check for gearbox noise on high-mileage examples.
2013–2018 · £4,000–£5,000

Criminally overlooked. The Jazz is tiny on the outside and enormous on the inside — the Magic Seat rear bench folds completely flat, giving you van-like practicality. Honda reliability is legendary, and these genuinely last 200k+ miles with basic servicing.
Watch out: Check the CVT gearbox fluid has been changed (many owners ignore this). Infotainment feels dated but it works.
2016–2019 · £3,000–£5,000
50–58 mpg
typical MPG

The Clio Mk4 facelift hit a sweet spot of style, comfort, and value. The 0.9 TCe is nippy and economical. Great motorway cruiser for a small car. Better to drive than a Corsa, nicer cabin than a Fiesta of the same age.
Watch out: Electrical gremlins (infotainment, central locking) on higher-mileage examples. Check everything works before buying.
Whatever you're looking at, run the registration before you even go to view it. A free check confirms the MOT history, mileage at each test, and whether the car is taxed. A paid check (from £4.99) adds write-off status and outstanding finance — both critical at this price point where sellers are more likely to be hiding something.
